BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA 103 is one of the most beautiful double stars in the sky, having a little blue companion close under its wing " (S.). Too far to be measured; shows scarcely any motion. The same remarks apply to Canopus, Betelgeuse, Achernar, Antares, Spica, and Alpha Cygni. . CAPELLA (Ca-pel'-la), of Auriga. A line drawn across the brim of the Dipper, beginning at the handle side and carried on one and one-half times the length of the Dipper to the other side of the Pole-star ends nearly at Capella. A line from Pol- lux, through Castor, also points nearly to Capella. Capella means the she-goat; with its three kids (small stars) it forms an isosceles triangle. . PROCYON (Pro-cy'-on), of Canis Minor, the Little Dog- star. A line drawn from the inner rim of the Dipper, through the outer lower corner, and on for twice the Dipper's total length, touches Procyon, the Little Dog-star. A line drawn from Bellatrix through Betelgeuse, and on twice as far as they are apart, reaches Procyon. Procyon, Castor, and the Pole-star are nearly on a line, of which two-thirds is between Castor and the pole. It is a white star and is going from us (F.). Both the Dog-stars are dogged by a dark, invisible com- panion. . BETELGEUSE (Bet-el-gerz'), of Orion, is an orange star. Draw a line through the two bottom stars of the Dipper, away from the handle, rather more than twice the total length of the Dipper, and it ends at Betelgeuse, in the Giant Orion's right shoulder. " Slightly variable. Too far to measure; no per- ceptible motion" (i^). " Sometimes it seems brighter than Rigel, and sometimes less brilliant. Orange stars twinkle least; white most"(^.). . (BETA, of the Centaur.) Not visible in the North. . (ACHERNAR (A-ker'ner), of Eridanus.) Cannot be seen in the northern latitudes. . ALDEBARAN (Al-deb'-a-ran). A splendid red star in Taurus. It is the right eye of the Bull, one of the blazing lamps of winter. It is about as far from Betelgeuse as Betelgeuse is from Rigel; the three together make a right-angle, with Al- debaran nearest to the pole. It is the chief star of the Hyades that are on the head of the Bull
